Portals 4 & 5: Spain during the 19th century.
 

 Vocabulary 

PRONUNCIAMIENTO (PRONOUNCEMENT): Term of Spanish origin characteristic of the 19th century for a military uprising against the government, but not the state, because the Head of State, usually the King, is informed. In a coup d’état, both the government and the Head of State are deposed.

 

DISENTAILMENT: Set of decrees that resulted in the expropriation and privatization of some properties of the nobility, the church and local governments in Spain from the 18th to the 20th century. The lands were sold to the highest bidder at public auctions, but were bought by rich members of the bourgeoisie.

 

FRANCISCO DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES: Spanish romantic painter academically trained in Baroque and Neoclassicism in Saragossa and Madrid. They painted a number of portraits as court painter of Charles IV and series of prints as “The Caprichos” or “The Disasters of War”, inspired by the 1808 Spanish War of Independence, just as the paintings The Second and Third of May 1808. In later life he bought a house, called Quinta del Sordo ("Deaf Man's House"), and did the Black Paintings that prefigures the expressionist movement. His mortal remains rest in the Hermitage of San Antonio de la Florida, although it is said that without his head, donated to science by himself.

 

GLORIOSA: The Glorious Revolution, also known as “La Septembrina”, took place in September 1868, resulting in the deposition of Queen Isabella II and was followed by the Six Revolutionary Years.

 

SIX REVOLUTIONARY YEARS: Period of Spanish history between the Glorious Revolution in 1868 and the pronouncement that brought about the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy. It had three stages: a provisional government (1868-1871), the Democratic monarchy of Amadeo of Savoy and the First Republic.
