Vocabulary
MAQUIS: Spanish guerrillas of communist, socialist and marxist ideology exiled in France after the Civil War who continued to fight against the Franco regime until the early 1960s. Some sought refuge in the mountains and their numbers were enhanced by deserters and by escapees from prisons and concentration camps.
NO-DO: Colloquial name for Noticiarios y Documentales, ("News and Documentaries"), a state-controlled series of cinema newsreels produced in Spain and closely associated with the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco, who had a monopoly over the news and inform. The last No-Do was produced in 1981 prior to the operation's absorption into RTVE, Spain's state-controlled television and radio broadcaster.
WOMEN'S SECTION: Women's branch of the Falange political movement in Spain led throughout its history by Pilar Primo de Rivera (José Antonio’s sister).According to Álvarez Encyclopedia (schoolbook in the Francoist era), women must be instructed in Francoist patriotic, religious and social morals; they were inferior to men and should remain subordinated to them, with marriage, children and housework being their main goals in life. Women played a major role after the war, but they lost all the rights acquired in the Spanish Second Republic.
H.O.A.C.: (Working Brotherhood of Catholic Action): open-minded Christian organization critical with the dictatorship of Franco that was founded in 1946. It was linked to the communist party and she played a main role in the reconstruction of the Spanish labor movement with the J.O.C. (Christian Working Youth). Both organizations exist nowadays.
